Hovenweep National Monument

Hovenweep National Monument is located between southeast Utah and southwest Colorado just north and west of Cortez, Colorado. There is a paved road to the visitor center from Cortez. Full services are not available at Hovenweep but other nearby towns offer complete services such as Blanding, Monticello, Utah and Cortez, Colorado. Hovenweep consists of six pre-historic Puebloan villages, with human habitation dating over 10,000 years ago. The word "hovenweep" is a Ute Indian word meaning "deserted valley". Hovenweep's trail system offers excellent views of all the archeological sites. Hovenweep has a campground and short hikes that enable you to see the archeological sites up close.

Visitor Center

The visitor center is open daily:
  • 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.

The visitor center is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day

Hovenweep National Monument Activities

Archeological Sites

  • Cajon - Is a small village constructed in the same configuration as Hackberry, Horseshoe and Holly.
  • Cutthroat Castle - This group is different from the other groups as it has a large number of kivas relative to other building types.
  • Goodman Point - The group here consists of partially buried pueblos that vary in size and are covered by pinon-juniper or sagebrush.
  • Holly - This site includes Tilted Tower and Boulder House, both are multi-story towers.
  • Horsehoe & Hackberry - This group involves a 1 mile round trip hike and contains multi-story towers.
  • Square Tower - Contains the largest concentration of Puebloan structures in Hovenweep.

Hovenweep National Monument Camping

Hovenweep has a small year round campground located at the visitors center. The campground is first-come, first served in which the campsites include tables, fire grills, tent pads, shade structures, running water and flush toilets.

Hovenweep National Monument Pets

Pets are allowed on the trails and campground, but must be leashed at all times.

There are no area Dog Kennels that offer Boarding.

Hovenweep National Monument Entrance Fees

Individuals: $3.00
The individual pass is valid for 7 days and applies to motorcycles, bicycles, and walk-ins (per person).

Vehicles: $6.00
The vehicle pass is valid for 7 days.

Local Passport: $25.00
The local passport is valid for 1 year and applies to Arches, Canyonlands, Natural Bridges and Hovenweep.

Buses and Commercial Vehicles: Please contact the park for fees.
